Tracking Courses - Kersey Lawrence

Kersey Lawrence

Tracking causes us to link together everything we know about animal behaviour (including humans) and their environment. Tracking is the way the mind works, putting together pieces of information to make sense of a bigger picture.

Tracking is arguably THE “Original Wisdom” of any culture, and combined with modern, i.e. “original” technologies and scientific methods it is not just a verifiable skill, it is also a powerful tool in the field-skills toolbox of natural and social scientists.

The first rule of good teaching is, “have something to say.” What this means is that you must know the information in your field very well. You must know its history, and keep up with any new discoveries. You can’t teach others if you don’t know what you are talking about – students can see through that. Do not be afraid to say, “I don’t know,”, but you must strive to know everything that you can know, and know multiple ways to describe it. Be an expert, but realize that being an expert does not mean that you can never be wrong, and it’s not an excuse to give up on learning.

Lee Gutteridge

I’m equally fascinated by the smaller details of the African bush as I am of the big charismatic megafauna, and my goal is to pass on this curiosity and passion to you.

Mentoring is about relationships, reciprocal relationships. Most of my students leave my courses as family, at the very least, as friends.

My guiding philosophy in life is, “Move through the bush as if you belong to it, not as if it belongs to you.”

What Our Students Have to Say

"I have studied and worked hard to be a better tracker in the United States and in South Africa. I've had many teachers but it wasn't until I started learning directly from Lee and Kersey that I began to develop a scientific understanding for the nuances of the craft. With Lee and Kersey, I'm not only learning track and sign and trailing skills, I'm gaining an understanding of the entire ecosystem and how tracking reveals how everything is connected."
Sandy Reed
Ohio, USA
"Kersey Lawrence and Lee Gutteridge are exceptional trackers, guides, and instructors. Their lessons are grounded and scientific, based on long-term experience, research, and hard-earned knowledge; yet each lesson still has room for wonder and excitement. They are highly skilled and constantly strive to expand their own knowledge. In every course they teach, they are also learning alongside the students. Their humility and genuine enthusiasm motivate and inspire their students to delve deeper into every subject of study. They make knowledge accessible to all levels of experience."
Kristi Freese
Washington, USA
"Kersey and Lee possess the high-level skills of Senior Trackers, but just as importantly, the passion, patience, and ability to teach and inspire learning. Lee’s enthusiasm and natural history knowledge of African flora and fauna is more impressive than I have seen from any naturalist in any location. It is simply mind boggling. Kersey is the most patient, persistent, and approachable teacher out there. Her exceptional track and sign and trailing skills are widely known across the world."
Mike Taras

“Learning the art of tracking is not just about looking at a few marks in the sand. It's also about immersing yourself in the magic of nature and the creatures that occupy it. That is the most important lesson I learned from Lee and Kersey. Their passion and continued excitement were shared continually with everyone and inspired us to learn more, and not just about tracking. No-one can ever know enough about the African bush.”
