Your Tracker Mentors for The Southern African Series

Tracking causes us to link together everything we know about animal behaviour (including humans) and their environment. Tracking is the way the mind works, putting together pieces of information to make sense of a bigger picture.
Tracking is arguably THE “Original Wisdom” of any culture, and combined with modern, i.e. “original” technologies and scientific methods it is not just a verifiable skill, it is also a powerful tool in the field-skills toolbox of natural and social scientists.
The first rule of good teaching is, “have something to say.” What this means is that you must know the information in your field very well. You must know its history, and keep up with any new discoveries. You can’t teach others if you don’t know what you are talking about – students can see through that. Do not be afraid to say, “I don’t know,”, but you must strive to know everything that you can know, and know multiple ways to describe it. Be an expert, but realize that being an expert does not mean that you can never be wrong, and it’s not an excuse to give up on learning.

I’m equally fascinated by the smaller details of the African bush as I am of the big charismatic megafauna, and my goal is to pass on this curiosity and passion to you.
Mentoring is about relationships, reciprocal relationships. Most of my students leave my courses as family, at the very least, as friends.
My guiding philosophy in life is, “Move through the bush as if you belong to it, not as if it belongs to you.”
