Frikkie Kotze answered this question correctly in our #trackertuesdays #dailytrackingchallenge. It’s scrub hare urine signs! Frikkie had this as a question on a #CyberTracker Track & Sign evaluation that he did with us, and nothing cements something in your head as being tested, having to come up with your own hypothesis and agonizing over it with your colleagues until the question is answered. As Frikkie said, “will never forget this, scrub hare urine.”
Lauren Lay contributed that she has domesticated rabbits and sees this in their litterbox every day.
Apparently, lagomorphs (“any of an order (Lagomorpha) of gnawing herbivorous mammals having two pairs of incisors in the upper jaw one behind the other and comprising the rabbits, hares, and pikas.” – Merriam-Webster) excrete calcium and other minerals gleaned from eating vegetation, through their urine. This causes the urine to turn white, and sometimes even orange in color.
